چکیده

Interrelationships among the effects of dietary protein, sulfur-containing amino acids, and choline on the serum cholesterol concentration of the rat have been studied. Hypercholesterolemia was induced by feeding rats a diet containing cholesterol, cholic acid, and saturated fat. When the diet contained choline, additional casein alleviated the hypercholesterolemia. A similar effect was obtained with a supplement of methionine equal to the amount in the casein. Cystine and cysteine, but not taurine, were as effective as methionine. These and other observations suggest that the serum cholesterol-lowering effect of protein supplements is due largely to the sulfur-containing amino acids they provide. The omission of choline from the diet also alleviated the hypercholesterolemia; but when the choline-free diet was supplemented with either choline or methionine, serum cholesterol concentration increased. A supplement of choline alone caused a much greater rise than a supplement of methionine or combined supplementation with choline and methionine. Thus methionine appears to have two opposing effects on serum cholesterol concentration in rats fed a hypercholesterolemic diet lacking choline: ( a ) a cholesterol-elevating effect attributable to its ability to spare choline by providing a supply of preformed methyl groups, and ( b ) a cholesterol-lowering effect common to sulfur-containing amino acids and not, dependent upon t,he provision of methyl groups.

Effect of Various Levels of Protein in Diet Based on Total and Digestible Amino Acids on Performance of Cobb Strain Broilers

In order to study the effects of various levels of protein in diet based on total and digestible amino acids on performance and carcass traits of broilers, an experiment was conducted as a completely randomized design with 288 broiler chicks from Cobb 500 strain in 6 treatments, each treatment consist of 3 replicates with 16 chicks per replicate. Treatments were the diets as follow: 1) diet for...

Antioxidant and anticoccidial effects of garlic powder and sulfur amino acids on Eimeria-infected and uninfected broiler chickens

To study the anticoccidial and antioxidant effects of garlic powder (GP) and total sulfur amino acid (TSAA) on growth performance, faecal oocyst output, oxidative stress indicators and antioxidant status markers in broiler chickens, a 2 × 2 × 2 splitplot-factorial arrangement of treatments was used. A total of 480-day-old male broiler chickens were equally assigned to two plots. Two hundred for...

Effect of Dietary Protein Sources on Lamb’s Performance: A Review

Protein and energy are the two major components of feed that influence performance of the growing and fattening lambs. Provision of the quality of protein in the lamb’s diet does not only improve the animal performance but also ensures profitable animal production. Different vegetable protein sources are used to formulate the rations for growing and fattening lambs. These protein sources differ...
